The BASA Awards spotlight stellar business/arts partnerships and projects across diverse sectors. “Over the past two and half decades the Awards platform has also evolved to create space for amplifying and showcasing South Africa’s rich contemporary creative landscape and heritage,” comments BASA CEO Ashraf Johaardien, who has been at the helm of BASA since 2019.
“The BASA Awards not only celebrate the synergistic power that comes from deep collaboration between the right partners, but also showcase the ways in which those partnerships are able to effect meaningful social change,” Johaardien explains. Since its inception, the BASA Awards have recognised and celebrated over 320 impactful business and art collaborations, and past iconic locations for the ceremony have included Iziko Museums, Beechwood Gardens, the Nirox Sculpture Park, the Constitutional Court foyer, the Market Theatre, Johannesburg City Hall, the Wits Art Museum, and even Park Station, to name just a few, all of them steeped in cultural relevance and deeply rooted in our country’s complex history.
This year, in celebration of BASA’s 25th anniversary and marking Hollard’s ninth year as an Awards partner, the Awards will take place against the backdrop of Villa Arcadia in Parktown, Hollard’s iconic Johannesburg landmark designed by Sir Herbert Baker and believed to be his practice run for the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Bloemfontein-born media personality Rorisang Thandekiso (Touch HD, SABC1 Breakfast Show, Metro FM) and blasian Fleur-du-Cap award-winning actress, puppeteer and voice artist Roshina Ratnam (Resident Evil 2022, Disgrace 2008 and Starcrossed 2019) will emcee the live (and livestreamed) ceremony, with transcendent jazz performer Zoë Modiga headlining the roll call of exceptional entertainment, which also includes internationally acclaimed dance company, Moving into Dance, and Madevu Entertainment’s Sounds of Hlakanyana. Mama Beats is set to round out the 25th Awards celebration festivities.
There were eight categories open for entry into the 2022 BASA Awards. Nominations were adjudicated by the Awards judging panel and audited by Middel and Partners. In addition, a special Chairperson’s Award will also be announced on the night of the ceremony.
