Founded in 1997, as a joint initiative between government and business, BASA is a public-private partnership that forms part of South Africa’s strategy to secure greater involvement in and support for the arts from businesses in South Africa. For this reason, BASA Grants have a slightly different lens to conventional funding and development agencies in that our focus is on amplifying and extending existing partnerships between arts and businesses that aim to meaningfully impact society through shared value and social cohesion.
With support from stakeholders, BASA is committed to bringing business and the arts closer for mutual benefit premised on a belief in the power of arts and cultural activities to drive positive growth in South Africa, and an understanding of the sector’s needs, not only for financial investment and subsidy, but also for better business skills and marketing expertise.
The Supporting Grants programme is designed to assist in activating sponsorship for a cross-section of arts projects in different regions of South Africa by providing financial support to projects that are in an already existing business and arts relationship.
Supporting Grants are made possible with the generous support from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). It is a key device for identifying, supporting and cementing the synergy between businesses and creatives.
Artist Relief Grants are an extension of the Supporting Grants platform. Here, BASA considers applications from individual artists, freelance creatives and independent contractors for once-off, short-term financial support for Covid-19-related medical care and/or prescription medicines.
BASA’s Supporting Grant Programme is designed for artists/arts organisations and businesses to assist in activating sponsorship for a cross-section of projects across South Africa. Financial support will be given to projects that are part of an existing business and arts organisation relationship.
