Founded in 1997 as a joint initiative between government and business, BASA is a public–private partnership that plays a key role in South Africa’s strategy to strengthen business involvement in the arts. BASA’s grants have always taken a unique approach compared to conventional funding and development agencies - focusing on amplifying and extending partnerships between the arts and business to create meaningful social impact, shared value, and stronger social cohesion.

With support from stakeholders, BASA is committed to bringing business and the arts closer for mutual benefit premised on a belief in the power of arts and cultural activities to drive positive growth in South Africa, and an understanding of the sector’s needs, not only for financial investment and subsidy, but also for better business skills and marketing expertise.

BASA Supporting Grants

BASA’s refreshed Supporting Grants Programme now serves as a catalytic platform for co-creation between business and the arts. With a focus on strategic alignment, mutual value, and innovation, the programme offers micro-grants as seed funding for prototype partnerships—small, time-bound projects that explore bold ideas at the intersection of creativity, commerce, and society.

This new approach positions BASA to actively incubate scalable, high-impact models that benefit both the arts and business.
