The fourth iteration of the Debut Fund Programme will support 50 emerging creatives to strengthen their businesses, access markets and build sustainable creative enterprises.
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — OCTOBER 2026 — Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), is getting the fourth iteration of the Debut Fund Programme underway, welcoming 50 emerging creative entrepreneurs from across South Africa into a structured business development journey.
Under the theme “From Idea to Market: Building Sustainable Creative Businesses,” Debut 4 is designed to help emerging creatives strengthen their business foundations, develop their entrepreneurial capabilities and connect their creative work to market opportunities.
The programme builds on the experience of previous iterations, with a more focused approach that enables targeted support for a cohort of 50 participants. Its emphasis extends beyond developing creative talent to building the business capabilities required to operate, grow and compete in the marketplace.
The programme follows three phases: Kickstarter, Hlanganisa and Market Access. Together, these phases will take participants through foundational business development, business model refinement and preparation for market opportunities. The journey will cover areas such as business planning, financial literacy, marketing, leadership, pitching and investment readiness, alongside mentorship and opportunities to engage with industry stakeholders.
“Debut has grown into a powerful demonstration of what happens when creative potential is met with structured support. Each iteration has strengthened our understanding of what emerging entrepreneurs need to succeed in a competitive and fast-evolving creative economy. We are proud of the progress made by participants in previous iterations, many of whom have begun taking meaningful steps towards formalising and growing their creative businesses. Debut 4 builds on this foundation with an even sharper focus on market readiness, sustainability and long-term impact. Our commitment remains to create real pathways for young creatives to build viable, thriving businesses,” said Nomkhosi Houghton, Debut Fund Programmes Manager.
A key focus of Debut 4 is market access. Through showcases, pitching opportunities, product matching and connections with corporate partners, the programme aims to help participants move beyond developing their business ideas towards reaching potential buyers, partners and investors.
The programme also seeks to strengthen access to practical resources that support business growth, including digital tools, e-commerce opportunities and financial literacy. These are important steps in helping creative entrepreneurs build businesses that are adaptable, commercially viable and better positioned to respond to changing market conditions.
For DSAC and BASA, the programme reflects a shared commitment to making skills and opportunities more accessible to young creatives while strengthening local creative economies. By encouraging participants to identify opportunities within their own communities and build on their cultural knowledge and resources, Debut supports community-driven development while preparing creative enterprises to compete in wider markets.
As digital technologies and artificial intelligence continue to reshape industries, developing adaptable businesses that can draw on local strengths while responding to global opportunities is increasingly important. The partnership between BASA and DSAC seeks to contribute to this by supporting emerging creative enterprises during a critical stage of their development.
Debut 4 forms part of BASA’s longer-term ambition to build a stronger pipeline of creative businesses that can contribute to economic activity, create employment and grow their participation in local and broader markets.
As the new cohort begins its journey, the focus is on turning creative potential into business capability, connecting talent to opportunity and supporting the next generation of South African creative entrepreneurs to build sustainable enterprises.
